Covidien Appoints New Board Members, Superbug Outbreak Expands

This week I’d like to highlight two stories. The first is on MassMEDIC member Boston Scientific’s appointment of former Covidien CFO Charles Dockendorff and Hologic CEO Stephen MacMillan to its board of directors. Click here for the MassDevice story.

The second story relates to the unfolding “superbug outbreak” tied to contaminated Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography Duodenoscopes (ERC) duodenoscopes. In late February, news broke that seven patients at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Medical Center were infected with drug-resistant carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), two of which died. The FDA subsequently issued a warning on how the design of the devices may impede effective cleaning. The warning can be found here.

Today, The Los Angeles Times reports that the outbreak has extended to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where an additional four patients have been infected with CRE from contaminated ERC duodenoscopes. The story can be found here.
