Congressional Briefings Stress Medical Innovation Part of the Solution to – Not the Problem of – Rising Healthcare Costs

A delegation of MassMEDIC members visited Massachusetts Senator William “Mo” Cowan in his Capitol Hill Office on June 4. MassMEDIC Chair, Peter Stebbins of DePuy-Synthes, (left of Senator Cowan) led the MassMEDIC delegation that included MassMEDIC Secretary Randel Richner of Neocure Group, Tom Sommer, MassMEDIC President and Heather Keith of Strohl Medical. The delegation also met with Senator Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) new healthcare legislative assistant, Remy Brim.

A delegation of MassMEDIC members, along with representatives from 13 other life sciences industry organizations, participated in a multi-state congressional briefing for members of the House and Senate on the value of medical innovation in Washington, DC on June 4, 2013. In attendance were the Hon. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and Hon. Erik Paulsen (R-MN), both Co-Chairs of the Congressional Medical Technology Caucus.

During the briefing, life sciences industry representatives stressed to members of Congress that medical innovations are a key part of the solution to lowering healthcare costs – not the problem. They described the role MedTech and Biotech products play in delivering high-quality, cost-effective patient care. The briefing also addressed the challenges the life sciences sector is currently facing in an increasingly unpredictable, uncertain and complex environment, and how these challenges are impacting the industry’s ability to thrive, advance science, create high-paying jobs and develop new medicines and technologies for patient care.
