MassMEDIC’s 13th Annual Conference Focuses on Change

MassMEDIC held its 13th Annual Conference on May 5 at the JFK Library and Museum in Boston, and the focus of the four plenary presentations was on change --- change within the industry, at FDA, in the European marketplace and in national health care policy.

Rich Ramko, U.S. Health Care Practice Leader at Ernst & Young, began the presentations with his firm’s comprehensive overview of the medical device industry. His presentation was followed by Mark Heller, chair of Goodwin Procter, LLP’s FDA Group, who spoke of change at the FDA and preemption legislation.

John Wilkinson, Chief Executive of the Eucomed, an organization of trade association and device manufacturers in Europe, then provided an update on the size and current status of this region’s most-favored trade region. The conference presentations concluded with Steve Ubl, President and CEO of AdvaMed, who outlined what to expect in health care policies from Congress and the Obama Administration.

First Vice Chairman, Rich Ganz, then recognized outgoing directors: John Mazzola of Transmedics; Rick Packer of ZOLL Medical; and Mark Speers of Health Advances. As past chairmen, Mazzola and Packer will continue to serve as honorary directors.

Mr. Ganz then introduced the newly-elected members of the MassMEDIC Board, including three new members: Michael Hickey of K&L Gates, LLP; Brian Jarvis of BIT Group; Maggie Pax of MicroCHIPS. The First Vice-Chair then recognized and acknowledged the service of outgoing Chairman, Doug Lawrence of BD.
