Mass. Life Sciences Center Launches Matching Grant Program
Industry-University Partnerships Eligible for Funding

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (LSC) recently launched of its Matching Grant Program, including an initiative that funds up to $250,000 in joint industry-university medical research projects.

In announcing the grant initiative, LSC Chair, Dan O’Connell, released the following letter that provides additional program details:

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s (MLSC) Board of Directors, it is with great pleasure that I announce to you the official launch of the MLSC’s Matching Grant Program. The new competitive research program, which offers an initial $12 million in matching investments through three solicitations, is focused on attracting top scientific talent, spurring new research opportunities, and increasing industry-sponsored research in Massachusetts.

On February 11, 2008, Governor Patrick joined with Senate President Therese Murray, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, Congressman Michael Capuano and a host of life sciences leaders throughout the state to launch the new investment program, reiterating the critical state need to provide continued support for research activity at Massachusetts’ universities, colleges, and their affiliated research institutions.
This initial MLSC Matching Grant Program consists of three solicitations:

- The New Investigator Solicitation seeks to spur innovative new research and advance the careers of new investigators who are working on cutting-edge life sciences research at Massachusetts academic research centers and institutions. A successful applicant will receive a grant of $100,000 per year for up to three years. (Bidders’ Conference information listed below).

- The New Faculty Startup Solicitation targets investments to attract and retain nationally prominent faculty at Massachusetts’ colleges and universities. A successful applicant will receive a grant of $250,000 per year for up to three years, in a 1:1 match with the academic institution.

- The Cooperative Research Solicitation seeks to increase industry-sponsored research at universities and colleges in Massachusetts in order to facilitate scientific discoveries and inventions that lead to beneficial medical applications. A successful applicant will receive a grant of $250,000 per year for up to three years, in a 1:1 match with its industry partner.

Each proposal will be subject to a competitive peer review and will be judged on its scientific merit.

To obtain a downloadable copy of each solicitation and additional information about the program, please refer to the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s website at www.masslifesciences.com.

As mentioned above, we would also like to inform you of an upcoming Bidders’ Conference for the New Investigator solicitation, scheduled for Friday, February 29th from 10am – 12noon in the Press Room of the Omni Parker House Hotel, located at 60 School Street, Boston, MA. We hope this forum will serve as an opportunity to address inquiries regarding the technical, operational and performance specifications affiliated with the New Investigator solicitation.

If you have further questions, please contact Beth Nicklas at MLSC@masstech.org or 508-870-0312 ext. 1635.

We look forward to your participation in enabling this program’s pursuit of an enhanced scientific research enterprise, improved health outcomes and increased economic vitality for the Commonwealth.
Sincerely,

Daniel O’Connell
