Many MedTech-Related Issues Pending in Mass. State Legislature
The Massachusetts State Legislature ended their formal sessions
just before Thanksgiving and left numerous issues awaiting action
when they return from recess in January.
Among these are several impacting the medtech industry, including:
Reprocessed Single-Use Devices – The legislation
requiring patient consent if reprocessed single use devices are
to be used in their procedure is pending before the House Committee
on Public Health. This Committee reported the legislation out
of committee with a favorable recommendation two years ago.
DEHP Restrictions – A bill that would
require companies to seek alternatives to certain chemical substances
was re-written late in the term and now calls for a broader process
to curb the use of certain chemicals in manufactured goods in
Massachusetts. The bill had cleared the Senate Ways and Means
Committee and will be considered when the Legislature reconvenes.
Life Sciences Bill
Governor Patrick’s 10-year, $10 billion commitment to the
life sciences industry in Massachusetts has been the subject of
several hearings. An agreement between the Governor and legislative
leaders calls for final consideration and passage of the bill
by early February.
MassMEDIC has been actively involved in the activities surrounding
the bill’s consideration and will testify in support of
the bill at the next committee hearing in January.
