11th Annual Conference Examines MedTech Cluster Profile, Public Markets and Outlook for Innovation

Patriots’ Bruschi Discusses Stroke Survival Experience




Over 450 MassMEDIC members and friends gathered at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston on May 1 for the organization’s 11th annual conference. Attendees heard presentations on the status of the medical device cluster in Massachusetts; the state of public markets for medtech companies; deployment of new technologies in the medical device industry; and the experience of one, very well-known stroke survivor.

Michael Goodman, Ph.D, director of public policy research at the UMass Donahue Institute, outlined the findings of his recent analysis of the medical device industry in Massachusetts:

• Stable employment – 21,000 industry jobs – 29,000 jobs in related industry
• Massachusetts still maintains the second largest concentration of the medtech activity in the U.S., behind Minnesota
• Medtech exports out of Mass. continue to grow; now accounting for 10.5% of all goods shipped from the state in 2006.

Meeting attendees heard an optimistic report on Wall Street’s view of the medical device industry. Rachel Gravelin, managing director of Bank of America’s Healthcare Investment Banking division provided her perspective on investment trends and merger and acquisition activities.

After an active networking break, the conference reconvened for Dr. Stephen Oesterle’s remarks on the state of innovation and deployment of new technologies in the medical device industry. Dr. Oesterle, who is Medtronic’s Sr. Vice President for Medicine and Technology, reviewed some of the most impressive technology trends, highlighting combination products as the most prominent.

The meeting concluded with an inspirational and informative address by New England Patriots linebacker and stroke survivor, Tedy Bruschi. After outlining his rise as an NFL linebacker, Bruschi discussed his stroke experience and recovery, noting the role advanced medical technology played in his recovery and return to the playing field.

Also at the annual conference, outgoing members of the Board of Directors were recognized for their contributions to MassMEDIC. These included: John Collins of TIAX; Joseph Leghorn of Nixon Peabody; Rich Smith of Edwards Angell Palmer and Dodge; Josh Tolkoff of Ironwood Equity; and Jeff Wright of Ernst & Young.

The results of this year’s Board elections were also announced. Incoming Chair Karin Gilman introduced the following MassMEDIC members, elected to three year terms:

John Mazzola, outgoing Chairman of the MassMEDIC Board of Directors was acknowledged for his many contributions to the organization, which has included over five years on the Board of Directors and service on MassMEDIC’s Executive Committee.
