State Legislature Set to Take Up Reuse Legislation Again this Year

Legislation that would require patients’ consent if certain reprocessed single-use devices are to be used in their medical procedure was introduced again this year in the Massachusetts state legislature. State Senator Susan Tucker introduced the legislation in January, joined by colleagues Senator Robert Havern, Rep. Michael Rodrigues and Rep. James Fagan.

The legislation applies only to critical and semi-critical medical devices; those that pierce the skin and come in contact with normally sterile tissue. It is expected the bill will be the subject of hearings and consideration by the Public Health Committee this spring.

MassMEDIC members interested in supporting this legislation should join the Reuse Working Group. For more information, please contact Tom Sommer at 617/414-1340.
