Inverness Medical Innovations, Inc. has formed a joint venture with Procter & Gamble (P&G) to sell and distribute Inverness’ medical diagnostic products, including its home fertility and pregnancy tests. As part of the deal, P&G will invest $325M in cash and provide comprehensive marketing support for the joint venture. Inverness has also recently acquired Med-Ox Chemicals Ltd., a Canadian medical products distributor, to help build its Canadian distribution network….Danvers, Mass.-based Abiomed Inc. has received a CE Mark to sell the company’s intra-aortic balloon (IAB) and IPulse console platform. The company plans to begin shipping product to Europe early this year….Afferent Corporation, an early-stage medical device company focused on treating neurological dysfunction has received funding support by Stryker Corporation to support Afferent’s R&D efforts. Terms of the deal were not disclosed….In an effort to develop a device that will help reduce the costs of administering drugs, Cambridge Consultants is working a inhaler that could deliver powdered drugs with the same efficacy of a syringe-based system, at a fraction of the price. The company is in discussions with pharmaceutical firms to test the device with a powdered flu vaccine, among other drugs.
