Emerging Biomaterial, Orthopedic, and Non-Invasive Diagnostic Technologies Showcased at 8th Annual MedTech Investors Conference; Innovative Products Honored

November 9th

More than 400 attendees packed the ballroom of the Park Plaza Hotel on November 9 for MassMEDIC’s 2006 MedTech Investors Conference. Throughout the day, representatives of 25 early-stage and mature companies from a variety of healthcare markets presented their companies’ pioneering technologies and business potential.

The event kicked off with a panel discussion that reunited presenters from MassMEDIC’s first two Investors Conferences in 1999 and 2000. Moderator Amar Sawhney of Confluent Surgical led panelists Nancy Briefs (formerly of Percardia); John Santini (MicroCHIPS) and Jerry Brecher (SuturTek) through a discussion of the ups and downs of starting a medical device company, prompting the panelists to reflect on their key “lessons learned” in securing financing, developing their products, and sizing their technologies’ market potential.

Jerry Brecher was also honored later in the day with a Nixon Peabody/Smith & Nephew Medical Device Innovation Award for his company’s “360° Fascia Closure Device™”. Designed to recognize products developed in Massachusetts that improve the quality of and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, the Nixon Peabody/Smith & Nephew Medical Device Innovation Award was also granted to:

Haemonetics Corporation

ZOLL Medical Corporation

NMT Medical, Inc.

Insulet Corporation

Breakaway Imaging, LLC

MassMEDIC also honored Senator Robert A. Havern (D-Arlington) and Rep. Michael Rodrigues (D-Westport) for their work in support of the medical device industry in Massachusetts. Both legislators were champions of legislation that created the first state tax credit in the nation for payment of user fees to the FDA by Massachusetts medical device manufacturers.
