Special Interest Groups Address European Environmental Regulations, Change Management and Alternatives to VC Financing

On June 2, MassMEDIC launched a new EnviroForum for Environmental, Health & Safety representatives of MassMEDIC members. The inaugural session was co-hosted by Capaccio Environmental Engineering and focused on new European Union (EU) Directives for The Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS). Paula Esty, Senior Environmental Specialist at Capaccio, provided an overview of each Directive and its implications for medical device manufacturers’ product reliability and sustainability of EU revenue streams.

Participants also heard case studies from Affymetrix and Sun Microsystems on how they have approached complying with the Directives and some of their “lessons learned.” More details about the next EnviroForum on “Design for the Environment” will be released in the coming weeks.

“Executing Organizational Change” will be the topic of the June 29 HR Forum. Theresa Moulton, Managing Director of Performance Change Initiatives, will lead a discussion on building comprehensive, successful practices in organizations undergoing rapid growth and change. Topics to be addressed will include: integrating dispersed facilities and divisions; building consistent policies and practices across an organization; and identifying and implementing cross-functional best practices.

On July 20, the Emerging Company Forum will discuss “Alternatives to VC Funding.” Representatives from start-up companies and investment firms will discuss strategies for early stage companies to garner financing outside of, and in complement to, venture capital funding.
