10th Annual Conference Attendees Inspired by Kamen & Kurzweil

May 2, 2006

Despite the dreary weather, over 400 MassMEDIC members and friends gathered on May 2 to celebrate the organization’s 10th anniversary. Attendees heard outstanding presentations by futurist Ray Kurzweil; CDRH’s Larry Kessler; Dr. Carolyn Runowicz, president of the American Cancer Society; and inventor Dean Kamen.

Kurzweil’s address focused on reverse engineering the brain and human and the implications for society. Dean Kamen, arriving on his iBot wheelchair, discussed two new inventions – a small-scale power generator and water purification system – and his FIRST initiative – a program to encourage kids to undertake careers in engineering and science.

Outgoing MassMEDIC Director Linda Bentley, partner at the Boston law firm of Mintz Levin was recognized for her six years on the organization’s Board. Jeff Wright, partner at Ernst & Young, was also acknowledged for his contributions to MassMEDIC as treasurer for the past three years.

Incoming chair John Mazzola of Medtronic, concluded the program by highlighting the service of outgoing chair Rick Packer, CEO of ZOLL Medical Corporation. Mazzola presented Packer with several tokens of appreciation, including a contribution to the Worcester-area chapter of the American Heart Association in his name.
