Managing Technology Development Well – How’s That Different from Good Product Development?

April 27th

On April 27, the R&D Forum will address the intricacies of managing technology through applied research projects versus managing product development projects. Managing technology through applied research can be fraught with complications - the outcome is more uncertain, and sometimes it's not even clear what the outcome should be. Investment decisions are difficult, too - how to value technologies, how much to fund technology versus product development, and when to build capability internally versus outsource. Yet, some leading companies are incredibly effective in managing this process and fostering creativity and innovation.

Participants in this seminar will share honed frameworks, the tools and metrics that best support them, and their experiences of how best to manage technology. Speakers include John Lamb, Director, PRTM; Kathleen McMillan, Vice President of Research, Candela Corporation; and Kimberly Paddock, Director, Program Management Corporate Research, Boston Scientific Corporation.
