MassMEDIC Launches New Initiative Aimed at Developing Ties to Plastics Sector

With the support of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s John Adams Innovation Institute, MassMEDIC has undertaken a special project aimed at increasing the interaction between the state’s medical device and injection molding communities. The initiative’s main objective is to enable injection molders in the North Central Massachusetts region to qualify for outsourcing opportunities with area medical device manufacturers. At present, many plastics companies are interested in expanding their operations to include biomedical projects, however, many of the firms lack the information and expertise needed to make the necessary operational upgrades.

The year-long project will feature a series of educational seminars, facility tours and other outreach efforts, beginning with an industry overview by MassMEDIC President Tom Sommer and Tim Gerrity of Amplior, Inc. on September 23. On October 7, Chas Burr of Boston Healthcare Associates will brief plastic company executives on the regulatory issues and certification processes necessary to engage in medical device outsourcing. On November 9th, MassMEDIC will present a session, in conjunction with RemedyStaff on the operational and quality assurance systems deployed by medtech companies. All programs will be held, 8:00 – 9:30 a.m., at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Leominster.

MassMEDIC is working collaboratively with the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce to develop an inventory of injection molding capabilities in that region. The findings of this project will be highlighted in the upcoming Directory of Suppliers to the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry to be published this fall.
