Director of Operations (Cambridge)

 

Our client is a non-profit company that supports academic scientists world-wide in their quest to discover and develop new treatments for disease.  Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Operations will manage the operations staff and their daily activities while designing and implementing processes and systems to support the company’s fast growth.  If you enjoy the energy and potential of a young company, your strong operational competencies and solid leadership skills may be an ideal fit for our client.

 

Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate will evaluate the company’s current practices with the goal of suggesting and implementing improvements to the operational infrastructure.  Additional responsibilities include:

 

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the company
  • Suggest and implement processes to optimize operational efficiencies
  • Evaluate the current responsibilities of direct reports so as to further define roles and performance goals for each individual
  • Establish a performance management system and a streamlined decision-making process
  • Design a growth strategy for future staffing, and implement a consistent and successful hiring practice, including an on boarding plan for new hires
  • Evaluate the current management of the company’s intellectual property issues and implement safeguards for short and long term protection
  • Evaluate the IT infrastructure and suggest and implement improvements that support future growth
  • Manage the operating budget and provide input into strategic planning processes
  • Work with the executive team to identify new lab space and oversee move (move projected for end of 2010)

·         Work closely with the business development and scientific outreach functions to further short and long term organizational goals

 

Requirements

 

  • A minimum of five years experience in an operational role, ideally within a scientific organization
  • Management experience
  • A demonstrated record of successfully reengineering processes or implementing new systems or tools to successfully impact operations
  • Familiarity with the human resource and accounting functions

·       Familiarity with the biology research environment

  • An understanding of non-profit, mission-driven organizations

·       Excellent communication skills and ability to work closely with scientists and office staff

·       Excellent decision making and organizational skills and strong attention to detail

·       Familiarity with agreements and contracts related to intellectual properties in the scientific arena a plus
