Operations Manager (Waltham)

Our client is a leader in the design and production of patient-specific medical devices in their market segment.  They are currently seeking an Operations Manager to oversee scanning and lab services. This is a great opportunity if you are seeking to join a highly innovative and financially solid industry leader that promises excellent career growth opportunities!

Responsibilities

Reporting to the VP of Operations, the ideal candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the Scanning and Lab Services departments including personnel, quality, productivity, schedule and safety.  The two groups comprise a total of nine people over two shifts operating in an extremely time-sensitive environment.  These departments are part of the overall Operations organization which consists of 4 managers and approximately 50 technicians/operators.

The Scanning department uses industrial-grade, laser scanners to image the customer-supplied material (plaster casts of patient records).  These scans are processed and then used by downstream departments to design the medical device.  The department has one lead and five technicians and operates from 7:30 am to 10:30 pm in staggered-start shifts.

The Lab Services department consists of three technicians performing various manual processes and working with subcontractors to produce certain parts of the product offering.  The Manager has overall responsibility for managing these suppliers on a day-to-day basis.  An intensive effort is ongoing to automate these procedures and reduce dependency on outside suppliers.

In addition to the managerial tasks, the Manager is responsible for ordering all relevant raw materials, supplies and equipment, maintaining documentation required for training and maintenance, investigating customer complaints and implementing corrective and preventative actions as needed.

Requirements

  • College degree, preferably in a technical discipline.
  • A strong ability to manage a highly-committed and progressive hourly staff – at least 3 years of experience as a line manager or supervisor.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry, such as medical devices.
  • Familiarity developing production metrics and using those to drive performance and change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A relentless drive to meet customer expectations, including delivery and quality.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen and other programs for continuous process improvement.
