and Emerging Technologies
Massachusetts State Senate
Room 109C , State House

Dear Mr. Chairman:
On
behalf of the directors and officers of the Massachusetts Medical Device
Industry Council (MassMEDIC), I am writing in support of the economic benefits
related to stem cell research in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
As
you may know, the medical device industry is a vital part of Massachusetts’
economy. With over 21,000 jobs, 225 manufacturing companies, $5 billion in
annual sales and a well-established supply base, Massachusetts is home to the
second largest concentration of medical device production in the United States.
The strength and position of the medical device industry in Massachusetts
depends, in large measure, on the technologies developed and research performed
at the region’s academic institutions, teaching hospitals and companies. These
new and innovative medical technologies are directly linked to the vibrancy of
the state’s life sciences cluster.
MassMEDIC
believes that supporting stem cell research under appropriate guidelines will
bolster the Commonwealth’s preeminent life science sector and would be an
important component of a sound economic development strategy. States such as
California and New Jersey have already taken steps to encourage stem cell
research, raising the competitive profile of their life sciences sectors.
MassMEDIC
recognizes that stem cell research raises many questions beyond economics,
which are currently being debated. However, passage of stem cell research legislation
would be a clear signal to all members of the life science industry – medical
devices, biotech and pharmaceutical – that Massachusetts is serious about
providing a climate for growth and expansion. MassMEDIC urges your support for
this important initiative.
Thank
you for considering MassMEDIC’s position on this issue.
Sincerely,

Thomas
J. Sommer
